Dehli Durbar

Delhi Durbar review

If anywhere is the Mecca of Twickenham food culture then Church Street is it. What with the French market and the recent Hindu Holi event, evening dining in the summer months in a car free environment and a plethora of restaurants of all types, nothing comes close to Church Street. But yet again we have 2 of the 3 curry houses next door to each other. What is it that causes them to cuddle up so? Our choice was the Delhi Durbar.

From the outside it looks like a disco or late night bar with darkened glass and bright signs – very retro 80s. Inside the décor is rather drab which belies the external appearance. The menu was typical of that which can be found in a run-of –the-mill curry house anywhere in the UK  – little imagination displayed here, although there was a chicken liver main course I had not seen before. We started with papadoms and these included 6 different types of pickle and relish and were quite tasty. Our mix of main chicken dishes included dansak (too sweet), green masala (too sour), jeera (too rich tasting) and rezeela (acceptable). A good range of side dishes and at £2.95 reasonably well priced – the Bombay potatoes and the mushroom were remarked upon. However, there was little to distinguish this restaurant and one can only assume that most of their trade comprises post pub or rugby diners when, perhaps, the appreciation of food is somewhat short of optimal. Price and service, too, were undistinguished. Overall, disappointing.

We scored The Dehli Durbar out of 10 as follows:

Service 6.5

Quality 5.6

Price 6.4

Ambience 5.5
